Research Interests:

  • Dr. Chamberlain has focused his professional attention on non-timber forest products in community development for more than 14 years. Prior to embarking on his Ph.D. adventure, Jim worked in rural development forestry, throughout South and Southeast Asia, where he focused on integrating non-timber forest products into conservation development activities. He brings this international experience to his current focus on Appalachian forest-based communities. Jim's Ph.D. dissertation focused on understanding the attitudes and perceptions of forest managers concerning the management of eastern national forests for non-timber products. He is currently defining the breadth and depth of the NTFP industry in southern United States, defining the volume and value of these products to local and regional economies. He is developing protocols to monitor NTFP markets for selected products (e.g., ginseng, ramps, galax).
